Gua Sha

Gua Sha

What is Gua Sha and how can it help?

Do you have a stiff neck, tight shoulders, sore back or are you suffering from fibromyalgia or the flu? If so, then Gua Sha can help.

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique commonly used to treat pain (especially in the neck and upper back), inflammation and respiratory problems. In the TCM tradition, pain is oftentimes caused by the stagnation of blood in the local area of discomfort. The guiding principle behind Gua Sha treatment, is that this technique has the ability to break up stagnation, promoting the smooth flow of blood in the area, thereby relieving pain.

Gua Sha literally scrapes away the pain! A smooth-edged instrument is used to apply short or long strokes on the skin, typically in the area of pain or on the back parallel to the spine. This stroking motion creates raised redness (petechiae) or bruising (ecchymosis).

While Gua Sha is most commonly used to treat pain, it can also be utilized by TCM clinicians to address conditions such as:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Colds
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Flu
  • Fever
  • Heatstroke
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Sprains
  • Strains
